Overloaded
generators, excessive harmonics and the need for additional system
capacity resulted in the installation of two 15 kV 3.0 MVAR power
factor correction and harmonic filter units. These units included
many special features to allow for operation in the severe Arctic
environment. Examples are 5 kW 480 Vac industrial heaters, special
control scheme that insured the interior temperature was satisfactory
for operation and -110 degree gasketing material. Once installed
the harmonics were reduced to below IEEE 519 standards and the power
factor was corrected allowing for additional system capacity and
future electrical expansion
